Academic Writing for Natural Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics
- Workshop
This workshop will help doctoral reserachers to make the transition to the graduate-level standards of academic writing.
Writing is a fundamental skill that will help doctoral researchers not only write their dissertations but also advance their careers in academia or industry. This course will help them transition to the graduate-level standards of academic writing by teaching them
- to understand the inherent rhetorical situation of writing
- to articulate, develop, and support their point of view in an academic paper
- to develop efficient techniques for writing
- to plan, draft, revise, and edit their papers
- to apply conventions of form, style, and citation and documentation of sources as required by scientific and professional journals in English
- to use coherent structure, effective style, and grammatical and mechanical correctness to achieve clarity and credibility of a writer
Additionally, participation in the workshop will help answer the following questions:
- Why publishing? Why not publishing?
- Why do editors reject articles?
- Why do reviewers reject papers?
- What does a rejected paper tell us?
- How do I meet the editorial objectives of the journal?
- What are the criteria of a good article?
During the workshop, its participants will be invited to edit brief portions of their own work for coherence, clarity, and mechanics. We will do a writing exercise that will help the seminar participants achieve more clarity in stating the problem and articulating the significance of their study. The seminar participants will become more aware of good writing practices that will enhance the readability of their papers.
